Whether you’ve just considered it very briefly in passing, or if you’re seriously considering running a cycle, the more you know about steroids, the better. Androgenic anabolic steroids, or AAS, are synthetic variations of testosterone that are made in a lab. They can be injected or swallowed orally in tablet form, and they can do everything from building muscle, through to helping you to run a faster 40-yard dash. But what do steroids do?

What are the benefits of using AAS?

As dangerous as steroids are (more on that later) there are also a number of very significant benefits associated with using androgenic anabolic steroids for physique and performance-enhancing purposes. Take a look, and see what you think:

1. Increase muscle mass:

When talking about steroids, it should come as no surprise to learn that many steroids do indeed increase muscle mass. Now, there are countless steroids out there, and each one is created to serve a slightly different purpose to the last. Some steroids for example, help you to burn fat and enjoy more energy than usual. Others, however, are designed primarily to help you pile muscle mass onto your frame. Steroids designed with muscle mass in mind help to increase the amounts of testosterone and free testosterone in your body, which in turn allows your body to create more muscle. They also promote a positive nitrogen balance in the muscles and help you to retain more nitrogen, which in turn stimulates protein synthesis.

The greater the rates of protein synthesis, the more muscle tissue you can build. Strong steroids such as trenbolone for example, know as one of the most muscle building and also fat burning steroids, can potentially yield muscle mass increases of as much as 30 pounds per 8 – 12-week cycle. It would take years to build this amount of muscle naturally, yet with steroids, it takes weeks.

2. Speed up recovery rates:

When we exercise and workout, we put our bodies and our muscles under a lot of strain and stress. Lifting weights for example, doesn’t build muscle at all, it actually destroys muscle. We build muscle when we rest and recover. This is where steroids prove useful because they have been found to create the perfect anabolic environment required for protein synthesis to take place. This is where the body creates new muscle proteins to replace old and damaged ones as a result of the strenuous exercise you were doing. The faster you recover, the more muscle you build and the quicker you can get yourself back in the gym to train the following day. It also means that you feel less tired and less sore.

Again, not all steroids provide this next benefit but many of them do it has to be said. You see, certain steroids help to increase the production of red blood cells, which means that circulation increases, as does oxygen and nutrient transportation. Each red blood cell carries oxygen and nutrients around the body via the bloodstream, to the awaiting cells in your muscles. The oxygen and nutrients are then absorbed by the cells and are used as a source of energy. The more oxygen and nutrients the cells absorb, the more efficient they become, which means the more efficient your muscles become as a result.

This in turn means that steroids can increase your energy levels, they make the muscles stronger, they speed up recovery after training, and they can help the muscles become more efficient, which makes you a better athlete. There’s a reason why Lance Armstrong was juicing for so long, and there’s a reason why he was so dominant while he was competing. Unfair? Yes, assuming his competitors were natural, but it just goes to show how powerful steroids can be.

4. What are the dangers of steroids?

5. What can be done to counter the ill-effects of steroids?

Well, after finishing any steroid cycle, you should always run what is known as post cycle therapy, or PCT. PCT comes in the form of a number of drugs, which are designed to counteract the ill-effects of steroids. Clomid or Nolvadex are the two most common forms of PCT, though there are others. PCT helps prevent the aromatization of testosterone, it protects the liver and major organs, it gets your body back to producing testosterone and hormones, and it ensures everything functions as it should.
