Who was Charles Spurgeon? In some ways, it depends on who you ask, since his legacy is admired and drawn upon by so many. Alistair Begg suggests a parallel between Spurgeon and John the Baptist, noting the many qualities the two men shared, including their humility, bravery, and integrity. Ultimately Spurgeon, like John, pointed to Jesus, which helps to explain why so many people across theological traditions have been edified by his work.
19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight7 the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
