Does Scripture only grant rights to parents and duties to children? Not at all! As Alistair Begg shows, the apostle Paul also gives clear commands to Christian parents. Fathers, particularly, have a special responsibility to care for their children, not abusing or embittering them but raising them within a biblically structured home. Scripture discourages both legalistic and overly permissive parenting. Instead, parents must love and respect their children, stay consistent, and encourage them toward freedom as independent adults who glorify God.
21Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
